This is a pilot program. Not all customers will have an identical experience or have access to the same digital tools during participation.
How it works
If you’re already logged in to your MyPSE account, all you need to do is click the button above to open Rainforest Automation’s online store. You’ll find the EMU-2 device is discounted for PSE electric customers at $34.99 with free shipping.
After you purchase the device, PSE will work with Rainforest to sync your device to your home’s AMI meter before shipping the product to you. The device information is encrypted, so no one will be able to monitor your electric use other than you. Once you receive the product, simply turn it on, and it will automatically connect to your meter.
Once the device is operational, take it for a spin around your home: Turn on appliances or flip off the lights to see how your energy use may impact your electricity bill.
Who is eligible to participate?
If you live in a single-family home and receive electricity from PSE, you may be eligible to participate in this pilot program. Your home’s electricity meter has to meet certain requirements. Your meter must have been updated to a new AMI meter on or before November 1, 2020.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I am eligible to participate in the Pilot?
You will need to be an active Puget Sound Energy electric customer with a MyPSE account, and you need to have had a new meter at your service address for at least 12 months. Before purchasing the product, you’ll be asked a series of questions to help you confirm your eligibility.
How can I get help if I have a general question about the program?
You can reach out directly to PSE’s team of Energy Advisors. You can either fill out a form online or call 1-800-562-1482, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
How does my Home Area Display work?
The device establishes a secure, wireless connection with your electric meter to provide real-time electricity use and cost feedback. Your energy device and meter are securely paired only with each other. The device must be within about 50 feet (and no more than 75 feet) of the meter to have a strong connection and transmit information to your device.
Will the Home Area Display tell me how much my monthly bill will be?
No. The cost displayed on the energy monitor will not match your bill because it is only an estimated cost of how much energy you’re using (your home’s energy “supply”). Your electric bill is made up of several components, including costs associated with supply and delivery. This device will help you monitor costs for the supply portion of your bill.
What are the benefits of the device?
The home energy monitor can help you better understand your energy usage. The data you see is almost real-time (the delay is about 8 seconds or less). You will be able to see how each appliance or product in your home contributes to your total electricity usage and how you can change certain behaviors to save money on your electric bill.
How do I set up my device after I receive it in the mail?
Connect the power cord to the monitor and plug it into a standard 120V outlet. The device will power up and automatically connect to your meter. Refer to the Quick Start Guide included with the device for additional help.
How do I conduct an experiment to understand what contributes to my energy usage?
One of the advantages of the device is that you can track your energy usage in real time to see what effect your behavior has on your energy consumption. First, note the cost per kilowatt-hour on your device. Once you have established that baseline cost, turn on an appliance or light in your home; note the change in cost per kilowatt-hour. The difference in that cost shows you how much the appliance or action contributes to your energy usage.
Will the device protect my privacy?
Yes. The device can only communicate with your specific meter. No one else can see the information that is displayed on your device.
Can I use this device with another meter or at another location?
No. This device is programmed to communicate only with the meter at your current residence, and each meter is viewable only on the device programmed by PSE. If you move and take the device with you, or if your meter is changed, you will need to contact PSE at firstname.lastname@example.org to re-program your device.
